Job Application Tips

Top job application tips

Covering Letter

When you are applying to a job advertisement always remember to include a covering letter. You need to tailor this covering letter to the individual job, so make sure you include all the relevant information and experience you have. Highlight how you meet the demands of the job description and why you think the job is a perfect fit for you.

Your CV

You also need to make sure that your CV contains the relevant information and experience for the job you are applying for, just like your covering letter. Make sure that you do not simply send the same CV and covering letter for every job you apply for, as the employer will recognise this and may not think that you are suitable for the job.

Keep a record of your applications

It is vital that you keep a record of every application you make, so that if an employer contacts you, you can quickly look at all the information you have so you can respond to them correctly. The main information you need to keep a note of is:

  • The job title, company name and contact name for each application.
  • The closing date to make sure you don’t miss out on your ideal job.
  • Where you found out about the job, for example online, job advert, recruitment agency etc.
  • A list of all recruitment agencies that you have registered with.
  • All the feedback you have received from any applications, interviews, networking and speculative contact, whether positive or negative. This will help you learn about what employers want, so that you never make the same mistakes twice.

Speculative Approach

Firstly you must research your chosen companies, so you can clearly understand the area of work and the industry that you are interested in. The speculative approach can be a great way of showing your enthusiasm and interest to an employer, but there are a few important things you need to know about each method.

By phone

This approach is a fantastic way of speaking to an employer directly, with the chance to get an immediate response and feedback. You should ask to speak to the office manager or HR department, depending on the size of the company. So remember to speak confidently and coherently to make a great first impression. However it is important to bear in mind that it may be an inconvenient time to speak to the relevant person, and that it is often very difficult to deal with immediate rejection. However the more people you speak to, the more likely it is that someone will be interested in seeing your CV and finding out more about you.

By Email and Letter

This approach has the advantage of giving the employer the chance to review your interest and suitability before getting back to you with their feedback, plus your details will then be on file with them. It might be worth calling them first to let them know you will be sending something across. You should always follow up your initial contact with a call, whether you have phoned or emailed them to begin with. Remember, you are not asking them to consider you for a specific job vacancy; you should use this opportunity to show your knowledge of the company and the industry, and highlight how your experience can meet their needs. Only attach your CV to this email if it will add any further information that has not been included in the main part of your email, as this may overwhelm the recipient.

International Students

If you are an international student/job searcher, new to the country, use your religious or cultural organisations (church/mosque/cultural centres) as an important way to network and make valuable contacts. Also use your online social and professional networks as a chance to contact employers and recruitment agencies.
