Progress your career in business and accountancy

Well it has been ages since I introduced myself on this blog and started to give you some insight into what might await you if you choose life as an accountant - I hope it whetted your appetite but if life as an auditor didn't sound like you then don't worry -that is just one option for accountnats to follow and there are many more - that is what makes it such a great profession to enter.

As you can see from the blogs of some of my colleagues, life at Kaplan is really busy at the moment and in a future blog I will give you a bit more of an insight about the things we all get up to in our jobs, as this is yet another possibiltiy for you once your are a qualified accountant.

During my time in an accountancy practice, I did a secondment to what is called the Corporate Finance department. This is often thougth of as a very "trendy" area of accountancy to work in, and if you are good at it, there is certainly the opportunity to earn "big bucks".

So what to people in Corporate Finance do? Well really they provide the financial expertise needed by individuals and Companies when they are making significant investment decisions. This could include having a share issue, listing on the stock exchange for the first time, or buying or selling a company. The work involves lots fo financial modelling and forecasting - so its great if you like meddling with spreadsheets, as well as liaising with senior management in your client, and often bankers and other financiers too. Working on a "deal" can give you a great sense of satisfaction as you may have been working on it since it was just an idea and several months later, after probably encountering many obstacles, you help your cient achieve whatever it was they set out to achieve - and send them a decent bill for it too!

If this sounds like a career for you, then starting with an accoutancy apprenticeship while working for an accoutancy practice is a great way in!

Well, I have got 30 scripts to mark from the class I taught today so I will sign off, but next time - an insight into being a lecturer at Kaplan!
